Artist essay

For this essay, I will be talking about 2 American artists. The first artist being brought up is Micol Hebron. She is an American Interdisciplinary artist based in Southern California. Her interest are pedagogy, epistemology, evolutionary biology, social media, collectivity, and affect theory. The second artist would be Joseph DeLappe. He is an American artist based in the UK and is best known for his art about contemporary issues in politics. Both are amazing artists who have some good work.

Micol tends to make a lot of statements through her work. A repetitive thing I notice about her work is the nipple. She has made many pieces of art that relate to the censoring the nipple, and how the censoring only relates to a woman’s nipple but not a man’s. When I looked at her Instagram, I noticed she would use black-and-white art a lot with bright colorful art. A little different from Micol’s work, DeLappe focus’s most of his work in a different way. He is mainly known for his work in video games. One of his impressive creations to me was the line of chalk, he rode a bike around the Nellis Air Force Range to show an area large enough to create a solar farm that could power the United States. This is crazy to me because it shows where the world focus is instead of focusing on the people.

Both artists make statements through their work. Micol tends to relate her work to her own body, history, and socialized identity. Her recent art has been aimed at art history, humor, and intimate body imagery. DeLappe does similar things in his art but approaches it another way. I feel he bring attention to what is really going on and opens it to a broader view. I feel his art is very eye opening and bring attention to a bigger cause than power.

I feel these artists are doing good things with their work. I try to focus on specific things going on in society, I feel Micol’s art does bring awareness to some of the issues in today’s society like equality for women. I feel they are both doing good things to provide points for the people they are both good artist and I feel their art could bring attention to where it is needed.
